Snake in the Bonobo's shadow (1/8)
An Oxford biologist traces the roots of the epidemic to chimps and the even rarer bonobos in North East Congo, separated for millions of years by the Congo River, until brought together for medical experimentation for polio vaccine research, contamination of which triggered the AIDS epidemic. It is proposed that understanding the origin of AIDS can facilitate the cure - by searching for a weak version of this virus which might exist near the starting point. Themes of the urgency of the conservation of these apes, as well as risks of cross species viral transfer (zoonotic events) by various modern medical techniques in biotech., are nd discussed. Horrifying medical experimentation involving disease transmission, going on secretly on poor people in India are filmed in the last part (8).
