While you may or may not see the beautiful bird, El Biotopo’s convenient location (an hour from COBAN) makes it a great place to stop and explore the regions forests. The Quetzal, pictured on the Guatemalan flag, are vibrantly colored birds that live up in the mountains in tropical forests of Central America. Unfortunately these stunning birds, whose name means "beautiful bright feather, have an uncertain future due to habitat loss, population fragmentation and illegal trafficking. At the EL Biotopo, there are two trails that begin at the visitors center and complete a circuit through the forest. The one we hiked is The Los Helechos trail, which is 1.2 miles long, while the Los Musgos trail is about 2.5 miles. Both lead to waterfalls. From what we learned, the best time to visit the park is at sunrise in March or June near the avocado tree where they may be feasting. After hiking a couple of hours through the Los Helechos Trail, we were not fortune to find a quetzal. ↠↠ ↠↠ ↠↠ ↠↠ ↠↠ ↠↠ ↠↠ ↠↠ ↠↠ ↠↠ ↠↠ ↠↠ ↠↠ ↠↠ SPANISH TRANSLATION: Durante mi viaje a Guatemala, mi familia y yo hicimos una visita a El Biotopo de Quetzal, una reserva que protege una amplia área del bosque que incluye el ave nacional de Guatemala, el Quetzal, en peligro de extinción. Si bien puede o no ver el hermoso pájaro, la ubicación conveniente de El Biotopo (a una hora de COBAN) lo convierte en un excelente lugar para detenerse y explorar los bosques de la región. El Quetzal, representado en la bandera guatemalteca, es un ave de colores vibrantes que vive en las montañas de los bosques tropicales de América Central. Lamentablemente, estas impresionantes aves, cuyo nombre significa "hermosa pluma brillante", tienen un futuro incierto debido a la pérdida de hábitat, la fragmentación de la población y el tráfico ilegal. En EL Biotopo, hay dos senderos que comienzan en el centro de visitantes y completan un circuito a través del bosque.
