Welcome to the Bad Denim Review where we order and try on jeans for you. This week I wanted to have a closer look at some And Other Stories denim jeans - the Major Cut Cropped Jean. 0:00 Intro 0:36 And Other Stories Denim Collection 0:50 What Caught My Eye 1:14 Choosing The Right Size 1:39 Trying The Jean On 1:58 Analysing The Wash 2:47 Am I Keeping Them? And Other Stories is part of the absolutely massive H&M group which includes COS, ARKET, Weekday, Cheap Monday, Monki and of course the original, H&M. And Other Stories structures it’s denim as “The Classic cuts” 9 Easily definable shapes that are all quite different from each other and feel that perhaps the design team asked themselves the question - what are the 9 jeans that every woman should have in her wardrobe? I quite liked the look of the Dear Cut, which is like a 90’s skater with long wide leg where the fabric scrunches up at your shoe. It seems inspired by a JNCO jean of the ’90s. The Mood Cut also caught my eye, it looked like a great everyday jean - especially the black cropped style, it is a high waist with a little trumpet leg, a petite kick flare. But ultimately I went for the Major Cut which is a high waisted balloon leg. Now, something I overlooked when buying these and is a good indication of if they run big/small is what size have they put the model in? Models typically are a pretty standard size 8 or 26. For this jean Stories shot a size 27 which should have been a hint for me to size up. So disclaimer, I am just barely in this jean and I cannot breathe. But hey ho let’s keep going. For me, the back pockets are a bit small. I like a bigger back pocket. This is what I tend to find when buying high street denim online. They spend a lot of money on the design talent and shooting the jean. It looks amazing in the photo. But touching the fabric, it falls down here for me a bit. The wash in person is a bit more 80’s acid wash than I would like. It’s very veiny. In the photo, they look like an amazing Levi’s red-cast bright blue. Here they are next to an amazing Vintage Levi’s, you can see the tone they are trying to achieve but it just falls a bit short. The fabric is a cotton, lyocell blend. So there aren’t any stretch fibres in here. You know what cotton is, but Lyocell is a processed wood fibre - it starts with a eucalyptus tree typically that is ground into a pulp, and processed with chemicals then spun into yarn. It’s been used heavily by fast fashion for its eco or green properties. When added to cotton it gives it more of a soft hand or drape. This fabric I think would have benefited from more surface texture. This has been woven a bit tight and flat. So am I going to keep them? No, this pair is going back. Has anyone found the Other Stories pair that they like? Let me know in the comments. I really like their imagery. I like the simplicity of the denim collection. I’m going to order another pair for a future episode. I’ve put a
