‘Wizard of Earthsea’ – Fantasy TV Review - Friday Fantasy Show – Episode 213. The Bottled Imp is gets all wizardry we review ‘Wizard of Earthsea’, the 2004 two-part made for TV mini-series directed by Robert Lieberman and written for screen by Gavin Scott and is based on the Earthsea novels by Ursula K. Le Guin, and stars Shawn Ashmore, Kristin Kreuk, and Danny Glover. First broadcast by the Sci-Fi channel in the US, ‘Wizard of Earthsea’ is an adaptation of one of fantasy literature greats, Ursula K. Le Guin, ‘Earthsea’ novels, and as such the debate about how good adaptations are arises once more. At the time of writing this, I’ve read the first novel in the series, ‘A Wizard of Earthsea’ and was very impressed. My hope was the makers of this mini-series would fulfil the high bar Le Guin set. The set up is thus: King Tygath wants to rule all of the 1000 or so islands that make up Earthsea. Meanwhile, a young lad named Ged, who lives in a small village, is have visions about a girl and doors opening. King Tygath also wants to release the Nameless Ones who are demons from whom King Tygath hopes to learn the secret of immortality. When Ged’s village is under attack, he surprises everyone, as well as himself, by casting a spell and saves the village. Just where has Ged magic come from? Is he the one that can change the course of Earthsea history?
