Doom (typeset as DOOM in official documents)[2] is a landmark 1993 first-person shooter video game by id Software. It is widely recognized for having popularized the first person shooter genre, pioneering immersive 3D graphics, networked multiplayer gaming, and support for customized additions and modifications via packaged files in a data archive known as "WADs", after the extension of the data files containing the mods, which is an acronym for Where is All the Data.[3] Its graphic and interactive violence,[4] as well as its Satanic imagery, also made it the subject of considerable controversy. With a third of the game (9 levels) distributed as shareware, Doom was played by an estimated 10 million people within two years of its release, popularizing the mode of gameplay and spawning a gaming subculture; as a sign of its effect on the industry, games from the mid-1990s boom of first-person shooters are often known simply as "Doom clones".
