South Africa's Albacore tuna pole & line fishery on its journey to sustainability | MSC HD
Cape Town, South Africa: Tuna is one of the world’s most popular and economically valuable seafoods. In South Africa, tuna has been both an important part of fishing culture and key contributor to the economy since the mid-1960s. There has been a global increase in the demand for tuna, with an estimated 5.8 million tons of tuna now caught annually. Unfortunately, around 1 in 3 tuna fisheries are overfished, leading to concern for the future of some tuna. A proud part of Fish for Good, the South African Albacore pole and line fishery is on a journey towards sustainability. Through this fishery improvement project, the MSC provides the framework, tools and support to improve their fishing practices. About Fish for Good Initiated by the Marine Stewardship Council and supported by the Dutch National Postcode Lottery, the ‘Fish for Good’ four-year initiative is aimed at guiding fisheries in South Africa, Indonesia and Mexico towards more sustainable fishing practices.
