Roboexotica 2009 - Adult Mario Video
Also built on the same platform - Bartris: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qafivdcSekM Photos of construction at http://www.flickr.com/photos/qdot76367/sets/72157622852743956/ Blog post that goes into specifics of implementation up in the next week or so (after roboexotica is over), watch this space. Adult Mario is a cocktail robotics project for Roboexotica 2009 (http://www.roboexotica.com) by Nonpolynomial Labs (http://www.nonpolynomial.com) Adult Mario consists of an NES rom being played on the fceux emulator (http://fceux.com), a drink pouring mechanism, as well as ambient environment feedback based on events in the game. For each coin the player receives, a small portion of coke is poured. For each enemy they kill, a small portion of rum is poured. If they die at any point, water is poured into the drink. The ambx system lights up based on game events (red - enemy death, yellow (not shown in video) - coin, etc...), wind as mario runs faster, and the vibrator vibrates as mario slides down the flag pole. This system also demonstrates the usage of UDP-based OpenSoundControl messages being sent based on events in the game. All code for Adult Mario is available as part of the bartris project at http://www.github.com/qdot/bartris This OSC control idea should be extensible to any NES game, meaning any game could potentially be turned into a new and interesting experience. Or at least, something sufficiently silly/stupid. Thanks to: Monochrom (for bringing me to vienna in the first place and much much more) - http://www.monochrom.at Subotron (for the nintendo for the unit) - http://www.subotron.com Franz Ablinger - For helping me find parts and doing the heavy cutting for me so that I survived the project with limbs attached Kelly Moore - Designing the structure, and putting up with my questions about paint The organizers and participants in the Roboexotica Workshop - For all the great ideas that helped me implement this
