Move over Zack Snyder, it looks like there’s a new steward of the DC Extended Universe. Following the lackluster response to Batman v Superman from critics and fans alike, Warner Brothers has decided on a course correction and have tasked studio executive vp Jon Berg and DC chief content officer Geoff Johns to oversee the newly created DC Films. First reported by The Hollywood Reporter and since confirmed by multiple sources, Berg and Johns will now be responsible for steering the DC Extended Universe going forward, which will likely be good news for fans. While Batman v Superman director Zack Snyder has long been the one tasked with launching a DC shared universe on the big screen, overwhelmingly negative response to his latest film forced the studio to rethink their strategy moving forward. While not a financial failure earning around $870 million worldwide, it did fall way below expectations, particularly with Captain America: Civil War already approaching a billion dollars in its first month of release. As for the pair tasked with taking over the DC Universe, Jon Berg has already been working directly on films like Batman v Superman, Suicide Squad, Wonder Woman and Justice League and has worked closely with Ben Affleck on films like Argo and his upcoming Live By Night. Probably more exciting is the addition of Geoff Johns who is a longtime DC comic book writer turned executive who helped successfully guide hit DC Comics television properties like Arrow, The Flash and Supergirl. He’s also been working with Ben Affleck writing the planned Batman solo film. While the appointment of Berg and Johns to oversee current and future DC movies is a welcome sign, it should be noted that they will not be DC’s version of Marvel’s Kevin Feige. The pair will continue to report to Warner Bros and DC Entertainment and Johns will continue to be involved in DC television and comic book properties. The studio also wants to keep their DC Extended Universe filmmaker driven, which is reportedly the main reason for Seth Grahame-Smith’s exit from directing The Flash movie. This was to be his first directorial effort and the studio reportedly decided they wanted a more seasoned director who can handle a large budget movie and give it an authoritative stamp. As for the studio’s next film, Suicide Squad, while it won’t have been overseen by both Berg and Johns from the start, Johns’ reportedly was brought on to help with recent additional photography and has been involved with the film’s post-production. It was his involvement with Suicide Squad, which was reportedly to fix issues with the third act, that prompted the studio to assign him to oversee DC Films with Berg. It will definitely be interesting to see how the DC Extended Universe progresses with these new
