Homemade tonneau cover

10.04.2015
I have a Ford F-150 that needed a little help on the gas millage. My wife said; make a tanneau cover after I told her the prices to buy one. My wife found these long pallets at a camper dealership. These pallets were nice and straight. I took them apart and got enough usable planks from one pallet to make the tanneau cover. My son found some drapes in a dumpster behind a local hotel. Each drape panel is 7 feet by 6 feet with one side made of a canvas and the other side is either latex or rubber. I made a simple frame that fit inside the top lip of the bed and stretched over the shoulder of the bed. Each side used two boards and then three boards at the front, middle and rear of the truck bed. The bottom inside board is shorter than the top side boards. I cut the inside board to fit against the front of the bed and then the tail gate. The tail gate then presses up against it to help lock it in place. I secured all the boards together with screws that were just shorter than the thickness of the two boards together. I then stretched the canvas over the frame pulling it nice and tight and stapled it in place. I then used the tie down hooks and rope to secure it to the truck. At the tanneau cover frame I drilled holes for the rope to attach to. Then I stretched a bungee cord to take up the slack.
