They form a unique monumental in the pianistic literature of a century that is otherwise relatively lacking in great forms. No other important composer since Beethoven and Schubert had cultivated this form with such regularity. Prokofiev’s Sonatas are the work of a pianist - one of the greatest of the first half of the twentieth century. With Bartók, he was the great pianist and composer of his generation. The nine piano sonatas fall quite easily into three periods : 1 - The juvenile sonatas Nos. 1-4, composed between 1907 and 1917. 2 - Sonata No.5 of 1923, the only ‘’Western’’ sonata. 3 - The three ‘’War Sonatas’’ Nos.6,7 and 8 (1939-44), followed, as an epilogue, by Sonata no.9 (1945-47) We may point out that the composer revised Sonata No.5 at the very end of his life (1952-53).
