Funga Alafia Practice to be performed at Spiritual Living Center Atlanta on 11-17-2012

Neil Burns and Katrina Reid choreographed by Judith Samuel. Funga alafia Ashé, Ashé means "I welcome you into My heart today". The Fanga rhythm and dance is traditional to the Vai people of Liberia. The rhythm is played and the dance is performed as an innovation to the earth and the sky. The first person to introduce the Fanga drum rhythm & drum to the United States may have been Asadata Dafor. According a website about dance history the words "fanga alafia ashe ashe" were created by a community of Yoruba Ifa worshippers in Harlem reconnecting with their pre-diaspora ancestral homelands and who were open to sharing with others through their reinterpreted African drumming, singing & dancing performances.
