Apostrophe presents Base 12 HD

A Sei Smith Doodad Apostrophe presents Base 12, a 2-year global art project featuring 12 emerging artists in 12 radically different environments. The goal is to expose these 12 artists while simultaneously exploring the notions of site, art context, and reception. Base 12 will start with three guerrilla-style museum “exhibitions”, then move onto to a pop-up show staged on three subway platforms and three shows/installations in public parks throughout New York City. The project will then move overseas with three traditional art openings at Alan Istanbul, Corretger 5 Barcelona and a TBA gallery in London. Ultimately, Base 12 will culminate with twelve solo shows at the soon to be re-opened Apostrophe NYC. Each show will interact with the specific location chosen for its strong art-historical narrative. Rather than looking at the art as a variable that moves from site to site and context to context, Base 12 will ask the viewer to see site and context as variables that move and revolve around the art itself. Moving through contextual differences Base 12 exemplifies the democratization of space with art as the only constant. For the artists involved, Base 12 functions as an amalgam of a post-graduate program, an art collective, and a rebel insurgency. http://www.apostrophenyc.org
