Buddhism and Daoism Pt. 2 of 2

24.07.2009
By Adam Emanuel Victorn through Professor Rev. Dr. James Kenneth Powell II, opensourcebuddhism.org This very nicely narrated and visualized work begins by discussing the ways and manner in which Buddhism enters China, its reception there by Daoists and Confucian thinkers. The similarities are given and the merger of Buddhism with Daoism and also the Confucian critique of both. Victorn distinguished the three types of Buddhism as well: Theravada, Mahayana and Vajrayana. The types of Daoism are given two, along with a helpful distinction between philosophical and religious Daoism. The different views of nirvana and wu-wei are discussed as is the unique view of chi (ji), the difference between the meditation types in the two are compared and contrasted A Buddhist emphasis on infinite lifetimes, life as a drudgery and conceptionlessness, the Daoist emphasizes the joy of this life. The Buddhist relies on guidelines, Daoists, by immediate experience. Both reject social hierarchies and seek a type of harmony, but Daoists look to bodies, Buddhists, to minds. Super job! GRADE A plus 2% extra credit for the care to narrate so nicely, organize the material so well and find such crisp and clear images. Music was also nice.
