Santo Domingo Rush Hour Traffic Esq. La Duarte & La Mexicana TonyaTko Hora Rapida

19.08.2011
In the Dominican Republic (Republica Dominicana) Santo Domingo. Standing on the corner of La Mexicana & La Calle Duarte cerce de Barrio China (China Town)... I was mesmerized by the energy & took a 5 min covert vid of the rush hour traffic. Notice the Honking: Their are two different main modes of transport- The buses which run (mainly) a straight route to a pre-determined destination. There are no official "Stops" so the bus helpers stay on the "Lookout" for passengers who want to get on the bus and passengers who want to get off. When you get on you determine how far you want to go and you pay only for the portion of the trip you take. The other mode is Taxi-Share. It will go to specific corners & street locations and grab as many ppl as it can to fill up a full fare. The driver will usually honk & wait until his car is full. Everyone pays their share of the full ride. For ex: If the ride costs 200 pesos --if four ppl get in, the cost is 50 pesos per person. But if he can only get 2 ppl going in that direction then the cost is 100 pesos per person... so it is in the best interest of the passenger to sit and wait for more riders. If a person is in a hurry he can tell him to go on an they will pay the additional. The energy is very high-paced and often the persons getting on and off the bus will board or un-board while the bus is still partially moving.
