SMU Muay Thai Open Invitationals Volume 6 HD
The Singapore Management University (SMU) held their sixth edition of the Muay Thai Open Invitationals on Saturday, 31st August. Fighters from all ages and from more than 10 local gyms came down to compete in this amateur and novice competition. The event started at 10AM in the morning and they had a total of over 30 fights throughout the day. Fighters took part in categories that suit their level of competence. The novice fight was a total of three rounds of two minutes; the amateur fight was a total of four rounds of two minutes. For the novice category, many of the participants were first time fighters. They competed for the exposure and the experience they can get by going up against fighters from other gyms. The amateur category had fighters who were slightly more experienced in the amateur Muay Thai circuit. Most of them have had one or two fights under their belt. Despite only being one round more than the novice category, the amateur fighters are slightly more seasoned and have higher endurance and stamina. The Muay Thai community in Singapore is expanding as the number of local Muay Thai gyms are increasing. Even Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) gyms are hiring authentic Muay Thai trainers and champions to teach at their own academies. "The event is free and it would appeal to anyone to just come down and have a look. People can come from the underground stations or the streets and catch the action. People then start talking and through word of mouth, which is, to me, the best form of advertising, the community expands," Noel Walsh, coach from Impact MMA shared his opinions on the event.
