The ‘Ridgeback’ in its name is a reference to a distinctive feature of the breed – a narrow strip, or ridge, of hair that grows on its back in the forward direction. Its origins can be traced to the dogs of a variety of breeds brought to South Africa by the Boers in the 16th and 17th centuries. To adapt to the special climate and terrain in this new land, these dogs were crossed with the semi-domesticated hunting dogs used by the local Khoikhoi tribe. In the 1870s, some of these dogs were introduced into Rhodesia, or modern-day Zimbabwe, where they were found excellent companions in the sport of hunting lions. By the early 1900s, there were several types of these ridged African ‘lion dogs’ being bred, and a breed standard was drawn up in the 1920s to chalk out the most desirable traits and create a foundation for the modern Rhodesian Ridgeback. It was soon introduced to England and the US, where its strong hunting abilities won it many admirers. The female generally stands at 24 to 26 inches, and weighs around 70 pounds. It is a lean, muscular dog, slightly longer than tall. The short glossy coat is built for working in hot climates. The ridge of hair, which is about 2 inches wide at its widest point, has to be clearly defined, tapering and symmetrical, starting just behind the shoulders and continuing to the hips. The standard coat color includes different shades from red wheaten to light wheaten. Flat skull, slightly broad between the ears; eyes set moderately apart, blending with the coat color; and ears set rather high, of medium size are some other typical features. Grooming:The Rhodesian Ridgeback requires minimal coat care. A weekly brush to remove dead hair and an occasional bath should be enough.
