Riding the Rails/Ely - Part 1

15.09.2009
In this episode of Exploring Nevada, youll head to the mountain country of northeastern Nevada, where youll ride the rails of the famous Ghost Train of Old Ely. When copper was discovered in the mountains above Ely, the Nevada Northern Railroad was built to haul the treasures out of the mines and onto the rails, to fuel the industrial growth of the country. Today, it draws tourists from around the world to whats been called the best-preserved short line railroad in North America. With Series Host Gwen Clancy as your on-camera guide, youll get the insiders tour from Sean Pitts, director of the East Ely Railroad Depot Museum. Youll view the huge ore pit in Ruth, visit the old drugstore in McGill which served the needs of the smelter workers, explore the buildings of the railroad yard, tour the Depot Museum, and take a train ride into the hills behind a steam locomotive operated by the White Pine Historical Railroad Foundation. www.nevadaculture.org
