City of Stars Ukulele Tutorial - 21 Ukulele Songs HD

Play along to this easy ukulele tutorial for "City of Stars", theme song from the movie "La La Land"! The song “City of Stars” was composed for a movie called “La La Land” which stars Ryan Gosling opposite Emma Stone. Although the song was originally intended to be sung by Stone’s character Mia, the director realized during the read-through that the song fitted Sebastian (Gosling’s character) more. So Sebastian performs it solo in one scene in the movie shot in Hermosa Beach pier and later does a duet with Mia in their apartment. Although La La Land’s soundtrack included several likable songs, the melancholic “City of Stars” was the song most associated with the movie. The song has also been nominated in many film and music awards for best song. It won in most of these nominations including the Golden Globes and the Academy. “La La Land,” which was released in 2016, was directed by Damien Chazelle. Chazelle is a young director whose best-known movie prior to “La Land” was “Whiplash,” a 2014 movie he directed when he was just 29. He worked with his friend and film composer Justin Hurwitz in making the musical score for “Whiplash” which was a success and he enlisted Hurwitz’s help again with “La La Land”. While Chazelle was working on the script of the movie, Hurwitz was busy with the music. Hurwitz worked on several demos and sent them to Chazelle for review until a melody clicked. Sometimes, the demos took numerous revisions before they finally connect. Hurwitz recounted that although “City of Stars” became the song that is most associated with the movie, it was actually one of the songs with the least fuss during demo. With the melody done, Chazelle and Hurwitz now needed to have the lyrics added. After going through a number of songwriters, they found another duo – Benj Pasek and Justin Paul, who were excited to provide storytelling to match the hope and longing of Hurwitz melody. Pasek and Paul came up with the initial version of the lyrics in just a day – lyrics which Hurwitz and Chazelle found poetic and perfect.
