WBZ-TV (NBC) Commericals - March 26, 1989 - Part 1
So after a longish hiatus, I’m back. To celebrate, the Basement has given us another two parter, this one from WBZ-TV (NBC) on the evening of March 26, 1989. We got a couple ads we’ve seen in previous installments, but there’s some good stuff in there in pretty good quality. Part 2...shooting for next week. 0:00 to 0:30 – Kellogg’s Raisin Bran (And THAT’S how you humblebrag) 0:30 to 1:00 – Diet Dr. Pepper feat. Judy Tenuta (Tenuta was character comedian best known for referring to herself as a "Petite Flower and Love Goddess", playing the accordion, and being the former Mrs. Emo Philips. Today, she still works as a comic actress and voiceover artist. Here’s a sample of her routine in 1985 https://youtu.be/j8YTXQgYaX8) 1:00 to 1:29 – Johnson and Johnson’s Baby Shampoo feat. Charles Gross (I like how down-to-earth this ad is, but…what exactly are you doing that sometimes requires you to shampoo your hair three times a day?) 1:30 to 2:00 – McDonald’s “Scrabble” 2:03 to 2:23 - Lysol Disinfectant Light Scent 2:23 to 2:33 – Lysol Deodorizing Cleaner (And Lysol LOVES you!) 2:34 to 3:03 – Promise Extra Light 3:04 to 3:33 – Mars M&M Holidays (these days, the Easter Bunny would be CGI, and be really, really annoying) 3:34 to 3:47 – GE Soft White (illegal to manufacture in or import to the US since 2012 http://tinyurl.com/zvm72jw) 3:48 to 4:03 – Gaines Gravy Train (I am amused) 4:04 to 4:09 – Magical World of Disney interstitial 4:11 to 4:31 – Cosby Show/Different World promo (the term “Funny Aneurysm Moment” comes to mind… 0_o) 4:32 to 5:01 – Hyundai Excel (Produced from 1985 to 2000, the Excel was the first Hyundai model sold in the US. Here’s the Motorweek review: https://youtu.be/i-O5i1zeXXQ?t=3m35s) 5:02 to 5:05 – “Evening” promo (Jamie Lee Curtis was likely on “Evening” to promote her then-latest TV show “Anything But Love” with Richard Lewis. Here’s the opening: https://youtu.be/-5dK0-Q8Woc) 5:08 to 5:38 – Apple Cinnamon Cheerios 5:39 to 6:08 – Huggies 6:09 to 6:37 – Wrigley’s “Piece of America” (A shorter version of an ad we’ve seen before, and one of my favorites. ) 6:38 to 6:52 – Kentucky Fried Chicken (since 1974, eating KFC chicken at Christmas has been a yearly tradition in Japan thanks to a major marketing campaign that year. No kidding: http://tinyurl.com/neoeyks) 6:53 to 7:07 – Florida Orange Juice (what about…Blue MOON Orange Juice? http://tinyurl.com/hdb7qg9) 7:08 to 7:39 – “Quantum Leap” promo (Quantum Leap was a Donald Bellisario sci-fi series (1989 to 1993) that followed the adventures of Dr. Sam Beckett (Scott Bakula), a time travelling research scientist who “leaps” in space and time after a physics experiment gone wrong. A popular show in its day, and a cult classic, they’ve been talking about either restarting the series or producing a feature film for the better part of two decades. Given the current state of the film and TV industry and its dependence on remakes (http://tinyurl.com/ndgyw5k , total sidebar
