In July 1977 the National Youth Jazz orchestra of Great Britain had the honour of becoming the first British big band ever to visit the Soviet Union. The subsequent double LP “To Russia With Jazz” documented this visit with many of the tracks recorded live at the Russia Concert Hall, Moscow. The remaining tracks including this one were recorded at Regents Park Studios, St Johns Wood London. Dave would have been just 19 years old at time of recording. This is quite a blow for trumpet with long sustained phrases, only a few bars rest and ends on a super high note finish. Dave Plews was born and grew up in Plymouth, Devon. A fellow Plymothian I first heard of Dave when I joined the Devon Youth Jazz Orchestra in 1981. Dave had played 1st trumpet in the orchestra during the mid-late 70’s and was a bit of a legend! He went on to play lead trumpet with the National Youth Jazz Orchestra 1977-80 and subsequently toured & recorded with many of the top artists of the day including Eurythmics, Dire Straits, Elvis Costello, Howard Jones, Shakatak, Pete Townshend & Mike Westbrook. I was fortunate enough to play on some shows and gigs with Dave in the 90’s and remember them all with much fondness. Dave tragically took his own life in November 2000 at the age of 42. Miss you Dave. X https://eurythmics-ultimate.com/people/dave-plews/ https://www.discogs.com/artist/338788-Dave-Plews *** Apologies for poor audio quality.
