There may be a slew of new Star Wars films set to arrive in theaters in the coming years, but there’s now another Star Wars related film on the horizon that you may have never even heard of. Back in 1979, George Lucas commissioned a short film to be made that would play in front of The Empire Strikes Back. The film he chose was Black Angel, from original Star Wars set decorator Roger Christian. The fantasy film played with Empire in theaters in Europe and Australia and inspired the 1981 film Excalibur as well as the cave scene in The Empire Strikes Back. After its theatrical run, all copies of the short were thought to be lost until a negative was discovered at Universal Studios in 2011 and restored and re-released last year. Now, it’s set to become a full length feature. Slated to begin production in September, Black Angel is set to star The Lord of the Rings’ John Rhys-Davies and Rutger Hauer, best known for films like Blade Runner and Batman Begins. Original creator Roger Christian will once again write and direct the feature. The plot will follow a knight, a sorcerer and a princess on a quest to stop a demon king from destroying their land. Christian says the plan is to create a realistic world where quote, “life or death is the only prize”. An Indiegogo campaign has been launched to help fund the project with prizes that include a walk-on role, production experience and even an actual film negative from the original Star Wars gifted to Christian by George Lucas.
