“Who am I?” Speech by Eugene Dinescu Who am I? This is a question that I ask myself every single day and I encourage you to do the same If this question is addressed honestly one can obtain most of life’s answers simultaneously We as humans are complex: we have the ability to change, to evolve, and to grow Who am I? Through understanding who you are you begin to know what you want and what you stand for in life You change, you evolve, and you grow with purpose The very essence of who you are is constantly at work You are changing, you are evolving, and you are growing into who you want to become Who am I? You are your hero Your life has purpose Supreme purpose Nothing you do is wasted Do not do things for for the wrong reasons: To impress others To gain wealth To play it safe Because it is easy You must do things for pure love and because YOU truly want to do them Then and only then can you be happy Life is too short You owe yourself your best effort Don’t take shortcuts Don’t cheat Don’t lie Don’t be afraid of choosing the hard road As time goes on you will learn one law that absolutely nobody can bypass or avoid: If it’s easy then it’s not worth it Notice I did not say “probably” not worth it because nothing easy is ever worth it, trust me This holds true for every facet in life If you want to be the best you can be in anything it won’t be easy Excellence isn’t easy for anyone and it never will be In order to achieve greatness you will need to make sacrifices You want to be stronger, faster, leaner, and bigger Then you have to put in the work You can’t take shortcuts Every decision you make comes with a consequence You must pay the price I chose to pursue athletic training naturally When I was a teenager, older guys would tell me that I needed to take steroids and supplements in order to run a 4.3 in a 40 yard dash, in order to bench press 405lbs, in order to be 3% body-fat I used to tell them - no, I do not need steroids, supplements, or anything that will destroy my health Because I knew who I was And guess what, every goal I ever had I have achieved without any shortcuts By the time I was 17 I could run a 40 in 4.2 seconds, I could dunk a basketball at 5’10, I could bench press more than double my bodyweight And I did it all without any steroids or supplements Throughout the years I’ve only improved because I believed in who I am I never listened to the naysayers I took my life into my own hands and I worked with whatever I had Anything is possible I was born in an impoverished inner city I didn’t have money for food I didn’t even have money for school books I had to drop out of high school so that I could work and take care of my family I still worked out I still studied Nothing worth having is easy From getting my GED to going to one of the best Universities in the world - Columbia University, studying biology, and then getting into medical school, nothing has been easy But if I can do it so can you Whatever yo
