Hiking 120 Miles Alone on the Tour Du Mont Blanc Loop HD
The Tour du Mont Blanc is a 120 mile loop that circles the Mont Blanc Mastiff and passes through Swiss, French and Italian Alps. Each country’s section has its own personality. The trail is well-maintained and dotted with colorful “TMB” markers. You’ll find plenty of other people on this trail, all hiking for different reasons. It’s usually impossible to tell how long someone has been hiking because the trail is a loop with technically no starting or ending point. You’ll find thru-hikers with large packs doing the entire loop, day hikers, gondola tourists, trail runners, mountain bikers, families with dogs and locals taking their morning stroll. You pass tiny villages hidden in the mountains and large bustling cities filled with tourists. The trail is dotted with Refugios and campsites where you can eat, drink and sleep. The trail is safe, filled with people willing to help you out if need be and highly developed so anyone in good health and going at their own speed can complete the full loop. I recommend the Tour du Mont Blanc Loop for anyone attempting their first 100+ mile hike because of its beauty, moderate difficulty and low danger risk. While this is a very popular and hiked trail in Europe, you can still find quiet moments of isolation between towns and on the mountain passes high away from any roads or gondolas. Trail map - https://geni.us/P5Au I hike this trail in early August of 2019 and had a pleasant experience both with temperature and weather. I only experienced rain during the night of my last day. Sleeping in my tent at night wasn’t cold or too warm. The tops of mountain passes were usually a little windy and chilly but that’s to be expected. I would recommend hiking in the Summer between May and October. Geneva, Switzerland is the largest International Airport close to the trail. Being a loop, you technically could start at any point on the trail but I recommend beginning in Chamonix. The cheapest way to get to the trailhead is to take a Swiss Tours bus. The non-stop 80 minute bus ride is only $17 each way. You can be picked up at either the Geneva Airport or Bus Station. The bus will drop you off at Chamonix Sud Bus Station. Now that you’re in Chamonix you can delay your hike with a night in a hotel, eat and drink at restaurants or make your way to Les Houches where you’ll hike. I had a nice experience listening to live music and eating dinner at the Kitsch Inn. I would use it as the start and stop point for your loop. Before starting your actual hike, I recommend getting at least 100 Euros out of an ATM in Les Houches. Most of the Refugios and cafes you’ll stop at will only take cash. France and Italy take Euros but you’ll need Swiss Francs in Switzerland. Use an ATM in La Fouly to get enough Swiss cash to last the last few dozen miles. Europe is expensive compared to other countries that I have visited. It’s possible to spent quite a bit if you stop at every Refugio or mountain top restaurant f
