It looks like we may not have made our last trip to Panem after all as more The Hunger Games movies could be on the way. While The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 2 may be the least successful film in the franchise so far, it has still made an impressive $525 million worldwide and it looks like Lionsgate wants even more films. While the idea of The Hunger Games prequels have been batted around for some time, Lionsgate vice chairman Michael Burns compared the franchise to Harry Potter saying it will quote, “live on and on and on.” As you’re probably aware, next year will bring the first of at least three films that will introduce a whole new batch of heroes into the world of Harry Potter with Fantastic Beasts and Where To Find Them. The film takes place roughly 70 years before the events of the first film and Lionsgate could go a similar route with The Hunger Games with Burns telling a panel at the UBS Global Media and Communications Conference quote, “The one thing that kids say they missed (from the early Hunger Games films) was there was no arenas. If we went backwards there obviously would be arenas.” While this move would mean star Jennifer Lawrence would likely not appear, director Francis Lawrence recently told Entertainment Weekly that he’d be interested in going back 75 years and telling the story of the first Hunger Games. Whether or not that will be the way they decide to go, it does seem like we should be prepared for more The Hunger Games movies in the future. In addition to The Hunger Games, Burns also expressed interest in more installments of some of their other big film franchises; Twilight, Saw and The Expendables. While he didn’t go into specifics, he did hint that possible reboots, prequels and sequels were being considered for each. A fourth Expendables movie is already planned for 2017 and reboots of Saw and Twilight have been rumored for some time, but this is the first time the studio has suggested they are actively being considered.
