It is the third largest city in Armenia, after the capital Yerevan, after Gyumri, the socio-economic and political center of Lori region. The Primacy of the Gugarats Diocese of the Armenian Apostolic Church is located in Vanadzor. In terms of geographical location, it is located in a narrow and elongated depression between Pambak and Bazum mountain ranges, at the confluence of the Pambak and Tandzut rivers. The main part of the city occupies more than 1353 meters above sea level. According to 2020 data, the population of Vanadzor is 77.2 thousand people. In comparison, in 2017 the population slightly exceeded 90 thousand. In the past, for some time, the city was called Gharakilisa, after the establishment of the Soviet regime, Kirovakan, and the name "Vanadzor" was given to the settlement after the independence of Armenia in 1992. The most important evidence of the medieval history of the city is the village of Papan in Vanadzor gorge, which was located in the province of Nig in the Ayrarat province of Greater Armenia. Vanadzor was first mentioned as a foreign-sounding Gharakilisa in one of the notes on the Gospel page of Sahak, the abbot of Sanahin village, which refers to the earthquake of August 18, 1713. It is supposed that the former name of Gharakilisa (church) is Tatar և the city was given at the beginning of the 13th century after the name of the stone church located on the present northern hill of Vanadzor. According to Khachatur Abovyan, the locals migrated from Yerevan. Surviving the Armenian Genocide, many families who migrated from the cities of Kars, Ardahan, Bayazet, Erzurum in Western Armenia settled in Vanadzor. In 1918, the locals, led by General Tovmas Nazarbekyan, organized the self-defense of Gharakilisa, which was marked as one of the May heroic battles of the Armenian people. Vanadzor received the status of an urban settlement in 1924, after the sovietization of Armenia. The construction of the Tbilissi-Kirovakan-Leninakan railway station and post office contributed to the formation and development of the city. During the Soviet years, Vanadzor was an industrial and tourist city. It is currently considered one of the industrial centers of Armenia. Among the sights of Vanadzor are the central Hayk Square of the city, St. Mariam Astvatsatsin Church, Tairov summer house, Charles Aznavour Culture Palace, Vanadzor Drama Theater, Museum of Fine Arts, Stepan Zoryan House-Museum.
