On this episode, Scott, Alonso Duralde, and Danielle Radford are discussing three new releases – A Star Is Born, Night School, and The Old Man and the Gun. The critics also give their thoughts on the Ocean’s 8 Blu-ray that comes out on digital and Blu-ray soon and Hostiles which is available on streaming services. A Star Is Born is Bradley Cooper’s directorial debut. The film has been receiving some very powerful Best Picture buzz coming out of TIFF and other festivals. The film stars Cooper, Lady Gaga, Sam Elliott and Dave Chappelle and is also written by Cooper, Eric Roth, and Will Fetters. In this new take on the tragic love story, he plays seasoned musician Jackson Maine, who discovers—and falls in love with—struggling artist Ally (Gaga). She has just about given up on her dream to make it big as a singer… until Jack coaxes her into the spotlight. But even as Ally’s career takes off, the personal side of their relationship is breaking down, as Jack fights an ongoing battle with his own internal demons. Night School stars Kevin Hart and Tiffany Haddish and is the latest from one of the hardest working entertainers on the planet. The film from Girls Trip director Malcolm D. Lee sees a group of misfits who are forced to attend adult classes in the longshot chance they’ll pass the GED exam. Old Man and the Gun from writer/director David Lowery stars Robert Redford, Sissy Spacek, Casey Affleck, Danny Glover and Tom Waits. The film is based on the true story of Forrest Tucker (Redford), from his audacious escape from San Quentin at the age of 70 to an unprecedented string of heists that confounded authorities and enchanted the public. Wrapped up in the pursuit are detective John Hunt (Affleck), who becomes captivated with Forrest’s commitment to his craft, and a woman (Spacek), who loves him in spite of his chosen profession. Ocean’s 8 is the next installment in the Ocean’s franchise that takes it in a brand-new direction. Starring Sandra Bullock, Cate Blanchett, Mindy Kaling, Rihanna, Sarah Paulson, Awkafina, Helena Bonham Carter and Anne Hathaway. The film was written by Gary Ross and Olivia Milch with Ross directing it. The film’s synopsis reads as follows: Five years, eight months, 12 days…and counting. That’s how long Debbie Ocean (Bullock) has been devising the biggest heist of her life. She knows what it’s going to take—a team of the best in their field, starting with her partner-in-crime Lou Miller (Blanchett). Together, they recruit a crew of specialists: jeweler Amita (Kaling); street con Constance (Awkwafina); expert fence Tammy (Paulson); hacker Nine Ball (Rihanna); and fashion designer Rose (Bonham Carter). The target is a cool $150 million dollars in diamonds—diamonds that will be around the neck of world-famous actress Daphne Kluger (Hathaway), who will be centerstage at the event of the year, the Met Gala.
