New 2021 Toyota Yaris Cross - Small Hybrid SUV production | Off Road Driving | Interior & Exterior HD
Toyota Motor Manufacturing France (TMMF) has started production of Yaris Cross, an all-new compact urban-style SUV to be launched in Europe in August. Significant additional investment of €400 million has been made to enable production of two models on the same line at the plant—the 4th generation Toyota Yaris and the all-new Yaris Cross—scaling up TMMF’s annual production capacity to 300,000 vehicles. Designed and developed to meet the needs of European customers in the B-segment SUV market, the projected powertrain mix of the new Yaris Cross is expected to be made up predominantly by the low CO2 emission hybrid version, in line with the company’s plans for a 90% electrification mix by 2025. Yaris Cross is the second model to be based on Toyota’s GA-B compact car platform and the 8th TNGA (Toyota New Global Architecture) model to be made in Europe*. Its start of production also marks further progress of Toyota’s localisation strategy. Toyota’s vision for European localisation has further expanded this year, as Toyota Motor Manufacturing Poland (TMMP) started production of hybrid electric transmissions and electric motors, supplying the 1.5-litre TNGA petrol engine and full hybrid powertrain for both the Toyota Yaris and Yaris Cross. Toyota has also invested to increase capacity and modernise its Toyota Motor Manufacturing Czech Republic (TMMCZ) plant in preparation for start of production of the Yaris, which was named The Car of the Year 2021, to satisfy increased demand. The introduction of Yaris Cross production has brought the total employment at TMMF to almost 5,000. The new Yaris Cross carries over the supermini’s wheelbase measuring 2560 millimeters (100.8 inches) while featuring longer overhangs increasing the overall length by 240 mm (9.4 inches) to 4180 mm (164.5 inches). It’s also 20 mm (0.8 inches) wider and 90 mm (3.5 inches) taller than the Yaris, while remaining significantly smaller than the aforementioned C-HR. All-wheel drive is not that common in Europe’s small SUV segment, which is why we’re glad to report the Yaris Cross will offer an AWD layout coupled to a hybrid powertrain consisting of a three-cylinder 1.5-liter gasoline engine working together with an electric motor. The combustion engine has a thermal efficiency of up to 40 percent and can power the vehicle alone in front-wheel-drive mode. Once the sensors detect poor grip conditions, the AWD system kicks in and helps the driver tackle the rain, snow, or even sand. The total output for the hybrid setup stands at 116 horsepower, which might not sound like much, but do you really need more from a city-oriented crossover? Toyota claims the front-wheel-drive models will have CO2 emissions of less than 120 g/km while the AWD model will emit below 135 g/km per the WLTP regime. Toyota aims to build more than 150,000 units annually at its Valenciennes factory in France where the Yaris Cross will be assembled alongside the supermini upon which it’s based. The tiny hig
