It is also important to note our bones are more than just calcium. They contain 12 other minerals such as: potassium, magnesium, selenium, zinc, boron and many other trace minerals. Calcium is regulated by: 1️⃣Parathyroid hormone (PTH) 2️⃣Hormone D 3️⃣Calcitonin .....All of which require Magnesium. Mg regulates PTH secretion. (https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3910342) Mg plays a role in Vit D activation and function. (https://jaoa.org/article.aspx?articleid=2673882) Mg stimulates calcitonin to help put calcium where it belongs, in our bones. “While magnesium helps our body absorb and retain calcium, too much calcium prevents magnesium from being absorbed.” Nan Kathryn Fuchs PhD. “Unbalanced magnesium with excess calcium can show up as various symptoms, such as muscle cramps, anxiety, sleeplessness, constipation, migraine headaches, depression, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, heart flutters, difficulty getting a deep breath, diabetes and heart disease, including stroke.” Andrea Rosanoff PhD. A well balanced whole food diet and well-regulated physiology will provide the foundation for optimal retention of micronutrients. While some supplementation can be very beneficial to offset the imbalances being observed in our soils and the stress of the modern day living, the idea that we can simply plug in what is deficient OR manage what is being measured - ie. lab results, is not as simple. In the case of calcium, it’s not so much about the calcium (we’ve got plenty of that!) but more about magnesium. #calcium #calciumfoods #calciumoverload #magnesium #magnesiumdeficiency #magnesiumbene
