TOEFL Tuesday: Speaking Sample Answer, Task 2 HD

Need more TOEFL practice? Check out Magoosh: http://bit.ly/magooshtoeflprep This task is extremely similar to the first TOEFL speaking task, but instead of asking you to choose from a set of many possibilities, it asks you to choose between only two options. Compare last week’s question, “what qualities are important to you in clothing,” with this week’s question to see what I mean: Some people prefer to buy new technology that has not been widely tested, while others prefer to buy older technology that is better tested but less advanced. This phrasing of “some people” and “other people” is very common for task 2. But even if you see different phrasing, such as “do you agree or disagree with X,” your answer will have the same basic format—and that’s actually the same format that you use to answer question 1. First, you’ll state your choice. Then, you’ll give a reason why you made the choice that you did, and give a clear example of that reason. Then, if you have enough time, you will repeat the process of giving a reason and providing an example. After you listen to my example in the video, try answering the same question yourself. Give yourself 45 seconds to answer it, and use the structure explained above. Don’t worry about “right” or “wrong”—just make a choice and stay with it! Anything you can communicate clearly is helpful, and your answer doesn’t need to be 100% truthful, so don’t spend too long choosing between the options. Get ready for the TOEFL!
