However, still the best site for getting work immediately • I always recommend XLR mics starting out, unless your budget is under $100 total • Software: I use and recommend Adobe Audition but Audacity is fine for starting out • It’s important to remember that the space you are recording in is more important than the microphone you are using • It really isn’t about having an “amazing voice” it’s about sounding believable beyond anything else • You don’t need to buy something like a $3,000 Neumann right in the beginning • In the beginning things will be tough, very tough and you will likely make almost no money. This is the time where you will either choose to be patient or quit. Many people quit at this point but if you can manage to stay strong throughout this initially difficult part than you WILL succeed eventually. • Making money tends to happen more with voice over rather than voice acting, at least initially. • You are very unlikely to be paid for any character work in the beginning, so while it may seem less exciting your initial best bet is recording straight narrations, advertisements and the like • Get used to having scripts with really bad grammar, just deal with it and read as written • Some clients will ask for unreasonable amounts of revisions while others will be happy right off the bat • Your voice will get tired, you will lose it, this is natural and when it does happen you need to stop talking as much as possible and sleep as long as possible • You don’t want to sound like a “radio person” when recording a narration, instead try and sound natural • If you get a job, it is best to do it immediately and not leave someone waiting • Keeping a near perfect reputation is integral to success • You have to work at it every day to ensure success, even when you’re tired • Don’t rely on this as your sole source of income at least not initially as work can
