Walter Hughes — 8th AAF, 93rd Bomb Group, 330th Bomb Squadron

I had the thought of doing an oral history with Walt during last years visit of the Collings Foundation aircraft but a class of students made it to him first; this year I grabbed him first thing! Walt flew 35 missions over Germany as a Second Lieutenant with the 8th Army Air Force, 93rd Bomb Group, 330th Bomb Squadron. Five missions he flew were in the B-24 Liberator "Southern Comfort;" others were flown in the likes of "Joker, Molland Mallard," and "Hanger Queen." He taught me about forgetting the romantic beauty of Paris while heading home — if you could see the Notre Dame, the German flack guns could see you!
