Controversy over access restrictions on theHayouRiver, Pingtung HD

Controversy has erupted over changes to the management of a beauty spot in Pingtung. Officials have restricted access to HayouRiver, and imposed fees on visitors. An area known as “The Cloud Leopard’s Bathhouse” is now off limits except by vehicle. The unique scenic area is famous among nature lovers, many of whom are unhappy about the new management scheme. Nature lovers ford rivers and clamber up rock faces. Led by Pingtung County Commissioner Pan Men-an, the group explores the hidden wonders of Hayou River, in Labuwa Village, Wutai Township. All the travails of the journey and all the exhaustion just melts away. This incredible beauty spot attracts visitors from across the country. Some ride mountain bikes, others are keen to document the walk on camera. But all those choices are out of bounds right now. Since the Hayou River reopened, visitor numbers are restricted, and in some cases, fees are required to enter. Member of public Personally, I support it basically. They’re using the price to control numbers. We shouldn’t let too many people ruin the natural vista. Some visitors support the fees. But the price has just gone up even more, with four-wheeled motor vehicles now charged NT$1,900 for entry and exit. Walking and cycling are forbidden. Some are accusing local authorities of exploiting the landscape.
