This lesson comes from the Complete Beginners Electric Guitar Course. It is aimed at complete beginners and assumes no previous knowledge or experience of playing the guitar. Here’s the abridged transcript: This lesson is for you if you are finding it at all difficult to get clean sounding notes out of your guitar. If you are a beginner then it is well worth learning this basic skill right at the start, because this alone will make everything else you learn to play sound a whole lot better. Now the easiest way to get a clean note is to play an Open string. But even here you can produce a buzzy sounding note if you hit the string too hard! Whether you have decided to play using a pick, your fingers or thumb on your right hand, it’s worth spending a few moment experimenting with how hard to hit the open string to get a nice sound. So by experimenting playing a few open strings you can set the right amount of force required from your right hand. We then need to shift your attention to the fretting hand. Quality of sound of Fretted notes decided by three things all involving words beginning with P: Finger angle Perpendicular to the fretboard; optimum Pressure; Position just behind fret. Firm Contact between string and fret Is what results in a good clean sounding note. There are actually three distinctly different sounds you can get from a fretted note. A buzzy, or rattling sound; a sort of Dull thud ; a clean sound. You rarely or ever want to produce the first one of these. It just sounds bad! Initially you don’t want to produce the second type of sound either, although, at a later stage you will want to learn to use the dull sound to good effect – particularly if you aim to play funk music. Most of the time you will need to concentrate on making clean sounding notes whether melodically or in chords. So now it’s your turn: Have a go at deliberately making each of these type of sound. This is a great way to put you in control of the sounds you are going to make. I’ll leave you with a reminder of how to do that and I’ll See you next lesson.
