Money Savers: Dollar Store inspiration for holiday decorating
With holiday spending projected to grow this year, you might want to save some cash on holiday decorating. Do-it-yourself blogger Sunday Burquest says you can accomplish a classy holiday centerpiece using items picked up at the dollar store. "Everyone wants a centerpiece for the holidays. We want one for fall and one to transition into Christmas," said Sunday. 1. Using a drawer or a tray. In her first example, Sunday spray painted a metal index card drawer that she had in her garage. She shopped at the dollar store to pick up straw for a fall base and garland for a Christmas base. Then, Sunday picked up hurricane votives and vases for a dollar each. She glued ribbon or burlap around the midsection and filled the items with fake snow for Christmas or dried beans for fall. Then, Sunday used candles to complete the look. 2. Fishbowl effect. Sunday made another easy centerpiece using a large glass fishbowl that she found at a thrift store. She wound a simple fall garland of leaves and pinecones around the globe for a Thanksgiving table, and then replaced it with a Christmas leaf for the holiday season. "It took seconds," said Sunday. 3. Use Glass vases or apothecary jars. Using a large glass vase or apothecary jar is a simple way to decorate throughout all of the seasons. You might have a neutral-colored balls or seashells in the vase during the year and you can swap that out for decorative Christmas balls in whatever color scheme works for you.
