Halogenation of the Carbonyl alpha-Carbon

The enol and enolate anion are nucleophiles that react with halogen electrophiles (e.g., bromine, Br2 or iodine, I2) to generate compounds having alpha-carbon to halogen bonds. Under basic conditions, the reaction does not stop after a single substitution.
