WWI German U Boat Wrecks: UB-76 & UB-93 HD
Situated within a creek on the River Medway are the Wrecks of 3 WWI German U Boats. At the end of WWI the Germans surrendered 100 of their U Boats due to the armistice, these were taken to Harwich, some of them being sent to naval dockyards for scrapping and some to the French Navy. Three of the U Boats were purchased by a Cement Works in Halling, Medway. It is believed these particular U Boats could be the wrecks of UB-76 and UB-93. SM UB-76 a Type UB III submarine was constructed between 1916-1917 by Blohm & Voss of Hamburg. She was commissioned into the German Imperial Navy on 23rd September 1917. It had an armament of 10x 50cm (19.7inch) Torpedos and 8.8cm (3.46inch) deck gun, the crew consisted of 3 officers and 31 men. UB-76 was surrendered to the British on 12th February 1919. SM UB-93 was also a Type UB III Submarine. She was constructed between 1917 and 1918 by AG Vulcan of Hamburg. UB-93 was commissioned into the German Imperial Navy on 15th May 1918. It had an armament of 10x 50cm (19.7inch) Torpedos and a 10.5cm (4.13inch) deck gun, the crew consisted of 3 officers and 31 men. The U Boat was surrendered to the British on 21st November 1918. Following the surrender of the U Boats anything of value was stripped from them, this included the diesel engines and conning towers. In 1921 the U Boats are believed to have been scrapped at Rochester but one theory is that while being towed there they broke free of their tows and ended up at their final resting place.
