Performer: LA Dabke Troupe World Music & Movement Festival (Spring 2014) at UCLA wmmfestival.org Dabke is a traditional folk dance originating from the Levant, an area encompassing Lebanon, Syria, Palestine, and Jordan. Dabke in Arabic literally means “stomping of the feet” and is performed as a dance of the community. It has risen in popularity since its first appearance in the 1960′s to become a national dance. The LA Dabke Troupe was founded in 2007 by UCLA students and the troupe currently performs for community occasions, events at other universities, and even weddings.
