2.4 Equinox Broken Timing Chain Guide HD

08.05.2013
I see this all the time with the 2.4 Chevrolet Equinox. The cylinder walls become oval shaped, causing engine oil consumption. When the engine oil gets low, the tensioners fail to tighten the timing chain properly, which causes excessive play in the chain. This excessive play causes the chain to slap around and stretch. Eventually, the stretched chain breaks the plastic guide, as you see in this video. The chain then has a tremendous amount of play, and the engine jumps time, destroying the pistons and valves.
