An African Wildlife Safari – Zebras Crossing River Mara During The Great Wildebeest Migration HD
A herd of zebras was spotted struggling to cross River Mara during a one of our Kenya-Tanzania safari tours. Most of the Kenya-Tanzania safari tours offered fall between the months of June to October, during the migration from Serengeti to Maasai Mara. This leg is more exhilarating compared to the return trip. Why? It has just rained in Kenya and the River Mara is full. Crocodiles use the river as their hiding place as they lie in wait of the crossing wildlife. In contrast, when the water is shallow wildebeests, in particular, avoid crossing the river if they spot crocodiles. But, there is a great misconception about the Great Migration – that happens all year round between Kenya and Tanzania. Often called the Great Wildebeest Migration, it gives a false impression that only wildebeests cross the border in search of food. The truth is that this annual migration involves a variety of ungulates (hoofed animals). To be exact, an estimated 1.3 million wildebeests, 200,000 zebras and a multitude of gazelles, among a few other hoofed species make this annual exodus. For example, this herd of zebras was spotted struggling to cross River Mara during a one of our Kenya-Tanzania safari tours.
