Our goal is to give a new dimension to the life of colorblind and blind people. In 2012 Niel Harbisson, gave "I listen to color" TED talk. During his talk Neil, who is color blind, described how so called "Eyeborg" device improved his quality of life by enabling him to sense colors. Inspired by that idea we set a goal to help 285 million color blind and blind people to sense colors using commodity hardware, Windows Phone devices. We saw Imagine Cup as an excellent opportunity to raise awareness about this problem and promote our project. We built Windows Phone app called Sonochrome that turns color into sound. Color to sound mapping is our own design and we opted to use musical instrument sounds instead of frequencies to produce more pleasant color hearing experience. In order to make app accessible to blind people we implemented sound and vibration feedback for all commands. We are currently working on Windows 8.1 app and our future plans include real time image processing paired with composing algorithms to enable hearing colorful environments. We also plan to develop a detached Bluetooth-connected device which will have, along with camera, UV sensors that could extend our hearing to ultraviolet and infrared part of spectrum.
