DH Percussionist Modern Percussion Video Blog Within the world of ethnic percussion, the possibilities are endless when it comes to creating a drum pocket. In this video, I show two examples of how I build a percussion groove. Creating a funky pocket need not be the responsibility of the drum set player alone! My instruments may be from Third-World countries, but the music I create with them is most often for pop, rock, jazz, R&B, and other modern styles. The right percussion beats can improve nearly any genre of music. In layering percussion parts, the order is not particularly important. When I multitrack drums, I will begin with whichever instrument feels the most natural for creating the groove I have in mind. Often it is the congas (or whatever hand drums I am using) that I am most comfortable on when creating a solid groove. Other times I may feel that I need to hear my own shaker first, and then add on top of that. The priority is to lay a sturdy foundation on which to overdub my other parts. What is most important to me when I create a percussion groove is BALANCE - low-pitched instruments complimented by higher ones, busy patterns balanced with sparser rhythms on another instrument, bright metallic sounds evened out with woody, earthy sounds. Of course, in the world of studio percussion, a producer, arranger, or director may have a final say in what instruments you use in your percussion groove. As a young player, my concern was more about my role as a "color provider" rather than my responsibility to create a funky pocket. Yes, providing unique (and sometimes exotic) timbres is important, but GROOVE IS EVERYTHING! A funky percussion part can be the difference-maker in a piece of music.
