Garcia is considered among the world’s most skilled fighters not named Floyd Mayweather or Manny Pacquiao. Peterson says he belongs on that short list, too, and for years has had designs on fighting Garcia to prove it.In January, after lengthy discussions, promoters announced a unification bout in which Garcia’s World Boxing Association and World Boxing Council titles and Peterson’s International Boxing Federation belt would be on the line. But a short time later, Garcia (29-0, 17 knockouts) indicated he was uncomfortable coming down to 140 pounds as he gradually transitions to the loaded welterweight division. With leverage as the undefeated holder of multiple titles, Garcia left Peterson few options other than to back out or agree to fight at a catch weight.So when they meet Saturday night at Brooklyn’s Barclays Center, it will be at 143 pounds with no belts at stake.
