Lily is a girl who has been treated like a freak since she was a teenager. She developed wings and was adopted by a carnival where she performs in a lit booth as a "freak" Nate Poole, an old jazz player takes her away from this life, yet still allows her to feel like a possession. This is fully realized when she discovers that Nate has used her as a bargaining chip to Michael "Happy" Shannon in exchange for his own life. Megan Fox approaches this role with a great sense of vulnerability and displays a very layered character, with obvious insecurities about being betrayed and shunned by everyone around her because she has been deemed a freak throughout her life. Lily cannot stand up for herself in the patriarchal environment that surrounds her, she is simply expected to sit, docile and pretty for everyone including, eventually Nate himself, to behold in a shallow, idealised, yet ultimately phobic way. _ I do not own any of these clips, all are property of Rebecca Wang Entertainment, Annapurna Productions and the distributors.
