125th Anniversary of the Birth of Patriarch Josyf Slipyj with Kalophonia Male Ensemble HD

Patriarch Josyf Cardinal Slipyj (17 Feb 1892 – 7 Sep 1984), successor to the saintly Metropolitan Andrey Sheptytsky, was the revered Head and Father of the Ukrainian Catholic Church for 40 years. He spent 18 years in Soviet GULags for not renouncing his faith and allegiance to the Catholic Church. A theological scholar, his Collected Works comprise 18 volumes (Rome, 1968-2003). He spearheaded the movement for the recognition by the Apostolic See of the Patriarchate of Kyiv-Halych, made pastoral visits to Ukrainian Catholic communities worldwide, and founded the Ukrainian Catholic University (1963). His mortal remains have been interred in the Cathedral of St. George in Lviv, from whence he was arrested by Soviet authorities in 1945. The Kalophonia Male Chamber Ensemble was assembled from students of conducting at the Lviv Musical Academy in 2001. They specialise in ancient Ukrainian Church melodies, beginning with monadic chants of the 14th to the 17th centuries, and going into polyphonic music of different epochs. The group sings concerts in Ukraine and abroad and has taken part in many a music festival. They have recorded four CDs of Church and folk music.
