The first component is the concluding summary. In the concluding summary, you’re going to restate your main ideas from your essay. This doesn’t have to be done in one sentence. You can use one or more sentences as needed to restate your main points. In general, though, there are three main times of summary sentences. You can restate the thesis statement, you can restate your topic sentence, and you can also restate some key details. Let’s take a look at some examples of different types of summary sentences. Let’s use the same example about pizzas. So imagine you’ve just read an essay about why pizzas are one of the most popular dishes in America. I could simply restate my thesis statement by saying “in conclusion, there are many compelling reasons why pizza is one of the most popular dishes in America.” But you can see why this seems a little bit to simplistic, since the thesis was so straightforward. It’s best to use this kind of summary if there was a very long, complicated thesis. I could also summarize one of the topic sentences and say, “in short, pizza is one of the most popular dishes in America because it is cheap, convenient, and tasty. This would work well if each of the body paragraphs talked about one of these things, how pizza is cheap, how pizza is convenient, and how pizza is tasty. In this example you can see that I just combined it into one sentence so it’s kind of like a thesis statement, but you can always use two or three sentences as well to restate your topic sentences. Finally, let’s look at the most robust way to write a concluding summary, which is to include the key points from the thesis and the topic sentence, but also to include key minor details from your essay: “Pizza is one of the most popular dishes in America because it is cheap, convenient, and tasty. For only a few dollars you can find a cheap, hot pizza within 10 minutes of most homes. You can see in that final sentence that I added some key details from each of the body paragraphs, showing me that pizza is cheap and delicious and convenient. Remember, your conclusion is your opportunity to remind your reader about what your main points were, so your concluding summary has a really important job to reinforce your main point.
