IELTS Writing band 7. Lesson 1 – Task 1 – Line graph The topic today: The graph below shows electricity production (in terawatt hours) in France between 1980 and 2012. 1. Now we write introduction: - the graph : the line graph – because this is a line graph - below : we don’t use, because in our essay there is no graph in it. - show : compare, indicate, illustrate - electricity production : The production of electricity, the amount of electricity produced. - Between… and : from … to/over a period of…. so our introduction would be “The line graph compares the amount of electricity produced (in terawatt hours) in France over a period of 32 years.” 2. Write overview. As we can see from the graph, electricity production from nuclear power was highest, from renewable energy was lowest. - we will use these 2 features. Begin with “Overall”, then add the first sentence, use “while” to connect with the second sentence, we use “during the period shown” to end the overview. Sso our overview would be: “Overall, electricity production from nuclear power was highest, while the amount of electricity produced from renewable energy was lowest during the period shown.” 3. Body 1,2. We divide the graph into 2 body. Body 1: from the year 1980 to 1995. Body 2: from 1995 – 2010. Body 1: in 1980. Thermal ~ 120twh, Nuclear = hydroelectric ~ 75 Twh, Renewable ~ 0. We look at the trends. There are 1 line go up (nuclear), 2 lines (thermal, hydro) fluctuated, 1 line (renewable) remain unchanged. There is nothing special about the trend so we don’t want to talk about it here. We can see one year later, nuclear overtook thermal - we use this feature to write. Body 2: because body 1 we write the first year 1980, so body 2 we write the trend from 1980 to 2005 (2010). - Nuclear -increase - peak at 430 in 2005. (from 2005 to 2010, we don’t need to write). - Thermal -decrease ~ 50 in 1985 (from 1950 – 2010, we don’t need to write) - Hydroelectric - fluctuate between 50-80. Renewables - slightly increase in the last 10 years. (the reason we don’t write every number/date on the graph is that, we don’t have time, we only have 20 mins to write task 1. And IELTS is just an English test, test your ability to write the report. In this report we don’t need to report everything in it. But to choose a few numbers to write about. The score is based on your vocabulary, sentence structure, if u write 150 words or not, and is it easy to read and understand, do you make any comparison). That’s all they need, that is what the examiner try to look for.) --- Then we translate the outline - into sentences, sentence into paragraph. Watch my video and write down the sample essay, try to read it a few times, so u undertand the structure that I use, the words and the connection between those paragraph. If you need help. Comment or email me. I will reply.
