Q&A with James Schamus | TIFF Stay-at-Home Cinema | TIFF 2020 HD
The magic of filmgoing together, at home. TIFF Stay-at-Home Cinema hosted a virtual Q&A with producer, screenwriter, and longtime Ang Lee collaborator James Schamus on Friday, April 10, on Instagram Live (@tiff_net), before a screening of CROUCHING TIGER, HIDDEN DRAGON. We want to share the magic of filmgoing together while we watch from home. With this in mind, TIFF has curated a series from Crave’s extensive selection of titles, accompanied by conversations with special guests via Instagram. Learn more on http://TIFF.net/stayathome. Celebrated Taiwanese director Ang Lee brought wuxia to the West with CROUCHING TIGER, HIDDEN DRAGON, which won four Academy Awards and became one of the only foreign-language films to make over $100 million at the North American box office. When rebellious teenage martial artist Jen (Zhang Ziyi, in her star-making role) steals the legendary weapon of sword master Li Mu Bai (Chow Yun Fat), she sets off a chain reaction of events that embroils Li’s warrior friend Yu Shu Lien (Michelle Yeoh), desert bandit Dark Cloud (Chang Chen), and ruthless villain Jade Fox (played by the great martial-arts actor Cheng Pei-pei, star of King Hu’s wuxia classic COME DRINK WITH ME). Fusing martial arts and arthouse in its magnificently staged, often airborne action sequences over rooftops, lakes, and the tops of swaying bamboo trees, CROUCHING TIGER, HIDDEN DRAGGON created a boom in prestige Chinese action films which yielded the likes of Zhang Yimou’s HERO and HOUSE OF FLYING DAGGERS, Chen Kaige’s THE PROMISE, Wong Kar-wai’s THE GRANDMASTER, and Hou Hsiao-hsien’s THE ASSASSIN.
