Gawai & Kaamatan Festival is a celebration that is celebrated by the people of Sarawak and Sabah, mainly the Iban, Bidayuh and Orang Ulu community. It is a celebration of thanksgiving after the harvest of rice. Festival celebration is celebrated during the month of Gawai for a month-long and the state has determined that 1st and 2nd of June as a public holiday for the celebration. In Sabah, the Kaamatan Festival or Harvest Festival celebration will be greeted by Kadazan-Dusun, as well as other indigenous peoples like the Murut and others. On the 30th and 31st of May is a public holiday in Sabah for the purpose of celebrating the Harvest Festival. The Sarawakians’ and Sabahans’ living in the Penang Island and the Penang State Government collaborated once again to host this glorious event for the second time. Last year, a total of nearly 3,000 visitors attended the event. The main purpose of this event to be held in Penang is to gather as many as possible the people of Sabah and Sarawak who are working or studying in Penang to promote the uniqueness of art, culture and food of Sabah and Sarawak. This year, Gawai and Kaamatan Festival will be held on 10 May which fell on a Sunday. It will start at 6:00pm at Fort Cornwallis, Georgetown. The event will be inaugurated by the Chief Minister of Penang, YAB Lim Guan Eng. Various events will be held such as cultural dance performance from various ethnic groups of Sabah and Sarawak. The visitors will also be presented with special dishes such as Sarawak’s laksa, Kolo Mee and many more. Moreover, the special event of the night was the final Queen Harvest Festival, better known as Kumang Gawai in Sarawak and Unduk Ngadau in Sabah. Besides that, there is also King Harvest Festival for the boys or in other words it is called Keling Gawai. In this competition, participants from respective ethnics will showcase traditional tribal clothes.This whole event reflects the support of Penang State Government to the people of Sabah and Sarawak who wander far from home either for work or study in Penang.
