The Ride of the Valkyries From "Die Walküre (The Valkyrie)" Original music by Richard Wagner Transcribed For Solo Piano by Wong Chun-Wai Performed by: Ting Chung-Wai There are few piano transcriptions that successfully translate orchestral language into that of the piano; some took away important musical layers and some sacrifice various orchestral effects. This series of piano transcriptions seek to render not only the texture, but also the orchestral effects of some of the greatest works in the symphonic literature. Musical texture, spacing of chords, timbral differences of instruments, balance of instruments and practicality are all taken into account in the process of transcription, and certain instrumental effects are translated into idiomatic pianistic figurations that reflect the effects better than literal rendition. The decisions made in the process of transcription are based not only on individual sound but also on the overall structure of the piece so as to capture the composer’s intention as fully as possible.
