Direct Narration 2. Indirect Narration. Example: Rana said to me, " I am working" In this sentence, we can see 2 parts as Rana said to me and " I am working" Here , Rana said to me = Part of Reporting Verb and said is R. Verb. " I am working" = Reported Speech. If we want to change this sentence into Indirect Narration, We have to learn 4 rules. Rule-1: Subject of Reported Speech 1st Person, I/we follow the subject of Reporting Verb 2nd Person, you follow the object of Reporting Verb 3rd Person, He/she/ they_ No change Rule-2: Verb of Reported Speech Condition-1: When Reporting Verb= Present form V_V ( no change) Condition-2: Verb of Reported Speech When Reporting Verb= Past form V_VP VP_ had VPP Rule-3: Verb of Reporting Speech Assertive= told Interrogative= asked Imperative= Ordered, Requested, Suggested, advised Optative= Prayed/ wished Exclamatory= Exclaimed Rule-4: Instead of Inverted Comma [ "....." ] Assertive, Optative, Exclamatory= that Interrogative = if/ wh Imperative = to So, the sentence, Rana said to me, " I am working" Indirect: Rana told me that he was working.
